Alanine (AL-ah-neen)
An amino acid found in high
concentrations in muscle tissue. It is converted to glucose
in the liver. L-alanine is used to maintain blood glucose levels. Vitamin B-6 is required for normal alanine metabolism. It
acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain.
Aldosterone (al-DOSS-ter-own)
The outer cortex of the adrenal
gland secretes aldosterone which regulates sodium and potassium levels in the blood.

Alkaloid (AL-kah-loyd)
Organic alkaline substances that are synthesized by plants. These
substances usually end in "ine" (e.g., morphine, atropine, etc.). Alkaloids
react with acids to form salts, which have better water solubility and are often used in
medicine.
