Definition Page for DrumLib's Health Research Review:
Coagulate (coe-AG-you-late)
To convert a liquid into a solid or a gel. Blood clotting is an
example of coagulation..
Coenzyme (koh-EN-zime)
Substances that enhance or are required for enzymes to function properly. Numerous vitamins are precursors of coenzymes.
Collagen (KOL-ah-jen)
The main component of connective tissue.
Conjugation (con-ju-GAY-shun)
A coupling together. This often refers to a process where toxic
substances are combined with glucuronic or sulfuric acid. The inactivated substance is
then excreted.
CoQ10
Coenzyme Q10 (koh-EN-zime)
SYN: Ubiquinone (you-BIK-wi-known)
An important component of electron transport and ATP production. In some countries, coenzyme
Q10 is a prescription drug and is given to patients with heart failure to help them
generate ATP. It has been referred to in the medical literature a breakthrough in heart
failure. However, in America, CoQ10 is sold as a dietary supplement and doctors rarely
tell their patients about it. Many heart patients die needlessly because they never find
out about bioenergetics like CoQ10, carnitine, and taurine. They are
victims of the insane turf war between highly profitable prescription drugs and the
relatively inexpensive free market nutrients used in alternative medicine.
Coronary
The coronary blood vessels of the heart. Also refers to coronary
thrombosis.
Corpus luteum (KOR-pus lou-TEE-um)
A small yellow endocrine body that is formed in the ovary and
secretes progesterone and estrogen.
Corticosterone (CORE-ti-koss-ter-own)
The outer cortex of the adrenal
gland secretes corticosterone, which is involved in carbohydrate, sodium, and
potassium metabolism. Corticosterone is the main glucocorticoid
in the rat.
Cortisol (CORE-ti-sol)
SYN: Hydrocortisone (high-droh-CORE-ti-sone)
The outer cortex of the adrenal
gland secretes cortisol, which has anti-inflammatory
properties. Cortisol is the most potent and the most abundantly secreted glucocorticoid in humans. Corticosterone
is the main glucocorticoid in the rat.
Cortisol is released in response to stress. This is one reason
why you lose muscle when you diet. When excess cortisol causes catabolism,
the amino acids from the broken down muscle cause the liver to release increased glucose.
The body has trouble disposing of the excess glucose because high cortisol levels also
cause insulin resistance.
