Cysteine (SIS-teen)
ALSO: N-acetylcysteine (AS-e-til-SIS-teen)
ABBR: NAC
An essential amino acid that protects
against free radical damage, promotes wound healing and
has powerful anti-cancer properties. Glutathione, which
is involved in detoxification and the immune system, is made from glutamic acid, glycine and
cysteine. The best form of cysteine supplement is N-acetylcysteine (NAC). NAC (and
especially cysteine) is best taken with vitamin C and B1. It is such a powerful detoxification supplement that
emergency rooms give it to people that overdose on acetaminophen.
The FDA's attempt to ban life-saving amino acids and other supplements led to the passage
of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). Fortunately, both NAC and
cysteine are still available over-the-counter in America.

inflammation. They having both autocrine and paracrine effects and are involved in
cell-to-cell communication. Cytokines include colony-stimulating factors, erythropoietin,
interferons, interleukins, and tumor necrosis factors.
Cytotoxic (sigh-toe-TOX-ik)
Able to destroy cells. A cytotoxin is a chemical (or an antibody) that attacks the cells of a particular organ. These
chemicals are often used in chemotherapy.
