Endocrine (EN-doe-krin)
Secreting internally. A ductless gland that secretes into the
bloodstream and affects remote tissues.
Endogenous (en-DOJ-e-nus)
Produced inside the body, cell, or organ. The opposite of exogenous. Example: The testosterone
that the body produces is called endogenous testosterone. The testosterone that a
bodybuilder injects is called exogenous testosterone.
Endorphins (en-dor-fins)
These pain-relieving peptides act as
opiates.
Enteric-coated (en-TER-ik)
A tablet or capsule that has a coating that allows it to pass
through the stomach without dissolving so that it is assimilated in the intestinal tract.
Enzyme (EN-zime)
A protein that induces a chemical reaction. For example, enzymes
in the digestive juices break down food. Other enzymes, such as phosphodiesterase (PDE), inhibit thermogenesis.
