GABA
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (ah-ME-no-byou-TIR-ik)
This amino acid acts as an
inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous
system. GABA has been used as a tranquilizer substitute. Valium is known to activate GABA
receptors in the brain.
Gallbladder (GAWL-blad-er)
A pear-shaped receptacle located on the underside of the right
lobe of the liver that stores bile from the liver. Obese people are much more likely to
have gallstones.
Gallstone (GAWL-stone)
Gallstones are usually caused by excess cholesterol in the bile.
Sometimes they cause little distress, however, the condition can be quite painful and the
gallbladder can become enlarged. Treatments include stone-dissolving drugs, surgery, and
shock-wave therapy.
Gastric lavage (GAS-trick la-VAHZH)
Washing out the stomach. Stomach pump.
Gastrins (GAS-trinz)
Gastrin is secreted by the mucosa of the stomach (pyloric area)
in response to stomach distension and partially-digested protein. Gastrin stimulates the
secretion of gastric acid (HCL) by the parietal cells of the gastric glands. There are two
types of gastrins, type I and type II (sulfated). Cholecystokinin (CCK)
inhibits gastrin.
