GH
Growth hormone
SYN: Somatotropin (so-ma-toe-TROH-pin)
A hormone released by the anterior pituitary. Some of the GH causes the liver to produce insulin-like growth factor (IGF). This GH is then neutralized by the liver. GH release is inhibited by the hormone somatostatin. GH release is blunted in obesity and old age. The GH/insulin ratio is an important factor in obesity.

GH-IH

SYN: Somatotropin release-inhibitory factor (so-ma-toe-TROH-pin)
ABBR: SRIF
A hormone that inhibits the release of growth hormone (GH), insulin, and gastrin.

GH-RH
Growth hormone-releasing hormone
SYN: Somatoliberin (SOE-mah-toe-LIB-er-in)
A peptide that is released by the hypothalamus, which induces the release of growth hormone (GH).
