Hippocampus (hip-oh-KAM-pus)
A part of the brain that functions as an important part of the limbic system.
Hirsutism (HER-sue-tizm)
A condition characterized by excessive hair caused by high androgen levels. This can be caused by polycystic ovary syndrome or adrenal tumors.
Histamine (HIS-ta-meen)
An amine derived from the amino acid
histidine by histidine decarboxylase. Histamine is also released
from injured cells. Histamine stimulates gastric secretion, constricts bronchial smooth
muscle and acts as a vasodilator (arterioles and capillaries) causing a fall in blood
pressure. There are H1 and H2 receptors. The antacid,
cimetidine, acts by blocking the H2 receptor.
Histidine (hiss-ti-deen)
An essential amino acid (for
infants) that is the precursor of histamine. It has a vasodilating
and hypotensive effect. Histidine supplements may help
people with rheumatoid arthritis, allergies, and peptic ulcers.
