SYN: Antibody (AN-tee-body)
Antibodies are produced by B cell
lymphocytes. They provide protection against
infections, bacteria, viruses, etc. by binding to antigen and
neutralizing or destroying these invaders. The immune system makes a specific antibody for
each invader. As you are exposed to more and more bacteria, viruses, etc., your immune
system is "educated" -- it builds up a "library" of antibodies to
defend you.
