Definition Page for DrumLib's Health Research Review:
Infarction (in-FARK-shun)
Tissue that has died when the loss of blood supply deprives it of
oxygen.
Infusion (in-FYOU-zhon)
The introduction of a fluid (other than blood) into a vein. Also
refers to an extract made by steeping herbs in water.
Inhibin (in-HIB-in)
There are two kinds of inhibin: inhibin A and inhibin B. Inhibin inhibits pituitary secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) but it does not effect luteinizing hormone (LH)
release. Inhibin is released by the Sertoli cells in the testes
and granulosa cells in the ovary. Androgens
stimulate the release of inhibin.
Insulin
A polypeptide hormone with a molecular weight of approximately
5700. Insulin is secreted by beta cells in the islets
of Langerhans of the pancreas in response to high blood glucose levels.
Insulin resistance
Insensitivity to insulin. There can be great variance in the
sensitivity of different tissues to insulin. Example: insulin resistance often inhibits glucose (blood sugar) transport into the muscles for storage as glycogen. This glucose is then shunted to the fat cells, which
have greater sensitivity to insulin.
Intracellular (in-tra-SELL-you-lar)
Within the cell or cells.
International Symposium (ECA)
Numerous articles from the international symposium were printed
in Supplement 1 of the International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders
1993 Feb, Vol 17, (Suppl 1)
Interscapular (in-ter-SKAP-you-lar)
This refers to the area between the shoulder blades (scapula
means shoulder blade). Brown fat (BAT) is located in this area.
Interstitial (in-ter-STISH-al)
This term refers to spaces within an organ or tissue.
In vitro (in VEE-troe)
In glass. This term refers to an experiment performed in an
artificial environment like a test tube or culture media.
In vivo (in VEE-voe)
Refers to a test performed in a living body or organism. In vivo
can also be used to refer to a process or reaction in a living body or organism.
