Nicotine (NICK-oh-teen)
An alkaloid derived from tobacco.
Swallowing large amounts of nicotine initially excites the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the central nervous system (CNS). Interestingly, this is
followed by depression of these nervous systems. This can lead to death from respiratory
failure. Swallowing large amounts of nicotine causes excess saliva.
