The ovary is the major source of estrogens,
however, the conversion of androgens is an important source
of estrogen in postmenopausal women. The ovary also synthesizes and secretes 4-androstenedione, DHEA, and testosterone. In addition, the ovary also produces progesterone (large amounts during the luteal phase), inhibin, relaxin, and
prostaglandins (PG).
