Pancreas (PAN-kree-as)
A gland that secretes pancreatic juice, insulin,
and glucagon.
Pancreatic juice
A clear alkaline fluid that is secreted by the pancreas. Pancreatic juice contains a number of enzymes that are
involved in digestion. For example, trypsinogen and chymotrypsinogen digest protein;
amylase hydrolyzes starch; and triacylglycerol lipase digests fats. The secretion of
pancreatic juice is stimulated by secretin and cholecystokinin (CCK).
Papain (pa-PAY-in)
A protein-digesting enzyme found in
papaya.
Parenteral (par-EN-ter-al)
Refers to any medication route other than oral, such as intravenous, intramuscular, mucosal, or
subcutaneous.
Pathogenesis (path-oh-JEN-e-sis)
Origin and development of a disease.
