Phagocyte (FAG-oo-site)
Phagocytes "eat" bacteria, foreign invaders, and dead
cells. There are two types of phagocytes: microphages and macrophages.
Phenylalanine (fen-ill-AL-ah-neen)
An essential amino acid that is
the precursor for tyrosine,
which is the precursor for catecholamines and thyroid
hormone. Unlike tyrosine, however, phenylalanine is also converted into phenylethylamine.
Phenylalanine causes the release of cholecystokinin (CCK) and
reduces the appetite. D-phenylalanine acts as a pain reliever. Aspartame (the sugar
substitute) is made from aspartic acid and
phenylalanine.
Phosphorylation (FOS-for-i-LAY-shun)
The combining of a phosphate with an organic compound.
Phytoestrogen (FIE-toe-ES-trow-jen)
Nutrients found in plants that have mild estrogen-like effects.
