Precancerous (pree-CAN-sir-us)
A growth that is very likely to develop into cancer.
Precursor (pree-KER-sir)
A substance that precedes another substance. Example: since the amino acid phenylalanine
is turned into tyrosine, phenylalanine is called a precursor
of tyrosine.
Pregnenolone (preg-NEEN-oh-loan)
Produced in the adrenal glands,
pregnenolone is a precursor of progesterone and DHEA.
Pregnenolone is often called the "mother of all hormones."
Prereceptor
Refers to events that occur before a drug or hormone binds to the
receptor.
Progesterone (pro-JES-ter-own)
A steroid hormone that is sometimes referred to as the pregnancy
hormone. The corpus luteum secretes progesterone and estrogen. Progesterone is used to treat menstrual disorders and
threatened abortion.
Prolactin (pro-LACK-tin)
A hormone that stimulates milk production in the mammary glands.
Proline (pro-leen)
Hydroxyproline is made from the amino
acid proline. The integrity of your connective tissue depends on this amino acid,
since collagen is made of both proline and hydroxyproline.
Smokers who consume the nitrate food additives (found in lunchmeat, etc.) convert proline
into N-nitrosoproline, which is a carcinogen.
