PSN
Parasympathetic nervous system (par-ah-sim-pah-THET-ik)
Part of the autonomic nervous system (ANS).
The actions of the PSN are started by the release of acetylcholine.
Acting in opposition to the sympathetic nervous system (SNS),
parasympathetic nerve fibers slow the heart rate and narrow the bronchioles (tubes in the
lungs). Parasympathetic nerve fibers are involved in the release of insulin and digestive
fluids (bile and saliva) and intestine activity (peristalsis).
They narrow the pupils. Parasympathetic nerve fibers widen the blood vessels in the
clitoris and the penis.
SEE: Nicotine and Yohimbe.
Psychosomatic (SIGH-coe-so-MAT-ik)
Pertaining to the relationship of the mind and the body.
Psychosomatic theories of obesity would be outrageously insulting if they weren't so
blatantly ignorant. They portray obese people as neurotics who gorge themselves because of
unresolved mental problems. Although modernized variations of these theories are still
promoted, the 1940s were the "golden age" of this extremely amusing area of
obesity "research" -- more laughs than anything you will find on TV. Guaranteed!
