Definition Page for DrumLib's Health Research Review:
Receptor (ree-SEP-tore)
Structures found on cells that bind with (respond to) hormones
and drugs to alter the function of the cell.
SEE: prereceptor and postreceptor.
Redox (RED-ox)
A contraction of oxidation-reduction. Catecholamines
generate free radicals when they change from the reduced
form (quinol) to the oxidized form (quinone). This ping-pong
type of activity is called redox cycling.
Refractory (ree-FRAK-tore-ee)
Resistant to treatment.
Relaxin (ree-LAK-sin)
A polypeptide hormone that is
secreted by the corpus luteum. Relaxin inhibits
contraction of the uterus and facilitates birth by softening
the cervix.
Renal
SYN: Nephric
Relating to the kidney.
Respiration rate
SYN: Oxygen consumption
This is a measure of thermogenic
response that is often used in studies with tissue slices.
The respiration rate (oxygen consumption) is determined by repeatedly measuring O2 uptake.
These in vitro experiments studied the negative feedback
mechanisms such as phosphodiesterase (PDE) and adenosine that reduce thermogenesis. The preparation of these
tissues often involves chemical denervation
with 6-OHDA.
Reverse T3
Reverse T3 is generated when T4 is
converted to T3. This thyroid
test can distinguish between a person with low T3 because of sickness and true
hypothyroidism.
