Synapse
The gap between neurons (nerve
cells). One nerve cell secretes a neurotransmitter
into the synapse that stimulates another nerve cell.
Synergism (SIN-er-jizm)
There are two types of synergism: Positive synergism is
when the sum effect of two or more drugs acting together is greater than the additive
effects of the individual drugs (2+2=5). Negative synergism is when the sum effect
of two or more drugs acting together is less than the additive effects of the individual
drugs (2+2=3). Example: The thermogenic effect
of ECA is a positive synergism.
Systemic (sis-TEM-ik)
Throughout the whole body rather than one of its parts.
