Theobromine (thee-oo-BRO-meen)
An alkaloid that is similar to caffeine. Theobromine is obtained from the dried ripe seed of
Theobroma cacao, which is used to make chocolate.
Theophylline (the-OF-i-leen)
An alkaloid found in tea that is
similar to caffeine.
Thermogenesis (THER-moe-JEN-e-sis)
Heat creation. During uncoupled thermogenesis,
free fatty acids are oxidized (burned) without producing ATP -- the energy from the oxidation process is dissipated (as heat)
into the surrounding tissues. Thus, it is considered a wasteful or metabolically
inefficient process. During coupled thermogenesis, the oxidation process
leads to the creation of ATP.

Threonine (THREE-oh-neen)
An essential amino acid that is
metabolized into glycine. Threonine plays an important role
in the immune system. It is also involved in wound healing. Threonine is a constituent of
both collagen and elastin.
Thrombosis (throm-BOE-sis)
The formation or existence of a thrombus (blood clot) that blocks
a blood vessel. The term thrombogenic refers to a substance that causes blood clots to
form.
Thymocyte (THIGH-moe-site)
Refers to a white blood cell.
Thymolytic (THIGH-moe-LIT-ik)
Refers to the destruction of thymus tissue.
Thymus
A gland, located behind the breastbone, which is very important
to the immune system due to its involvement with the T-cells.
Thyroid gland
A horseshoe-shaped endocrine gland located at the base of the
neck that secretes thyroid hormone and calcitonin.

Removal of the thyroid gland.
Thyroxine (thigh-ROK-seen)
SYN: T4
T4 is the storage form of thyroid hormone. T4 is converted into T3. This conversion creates reverse
T3.
