TSH
Thyroid-stimulating hormone
A hormone released from the anterior pituitary that stimulates the thyroid
gland to release thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). A blood test showing a high TSH is often the first sign that a
person is (or is becoming) hypothyroid. The body often manages to maintain normal thyroid
(T3 & T4) levels for some time by increasing TSH. T3 and T4 levels act as a feedback mechanism (positive or negative) for TSH
release, which is controlled by thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH).
