2DG
2-deoxyglucose
An analog of glucose.
2DG is transported into the cells, where its phosphorylated
form blocks glucose metabolism causing intracellular
deficiency. Administration of 2DG raises growth hormone (GH)
levels. Peripheral injection of 2DG reduces the sympathetic
firing rate and stimulates appetite. Microinjection into the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) or the paraventricular nucleus (PVN)
does not effect the sympathetic firing rate.
2DG is also used to study glucose uptake by muscles.
