3-methylhistidine
(METH-ill-HISS-ti-deen)
An indicator of muscle damage (protein breakdown) that can be
measured with a urine test. Causes of elevated 3-methylhistidine include weightlifting,
heart attack, etc. The ratio of 3-methylhistidine to creatine
may be an important indicator for weightlifters who are trying to avoid the catabolic effect of overtraining.
3-PX
3-propylxanthine (PRO-pil-ZAN-theen)
3-PX is a phosphodiesterase (PDE)
inhibitor with low potency as an adenosine antagonist. Since it inhibits PDE while having very little
effect on adenosine it was used to determine whether PDE or adenosine was the primary
inhibitor of thermogenesis. Also used in these studies
was 8-phenyltheophylline (8-PT) which is a specific adenosine receptor antagonist (blocker).
