6-OHDA
6-hydroxydopamine (high-DROK-see-doe-pa-meen)
6-OHDA is used in experiments involving chemical sympathectomy. Rats are injected with 50
mg/kg (body weight) of 6-OHDA in the morning and evening. They are killed by decapitation
15 hours after the last injection and IBAT (interscapular brown
adipose tissue) is quickly dissected. The 6-OHDA depletes noradrenaline (NA) stores in the sympathetic nerves. This allows precise
dose-response studies that explore the mechanisms of thermogenesis.
