Anyone who has hassled with the metal "basket" type steamers that you put in a pot has probably given up on the idea of steaming food. They are a pain to clean and if you aren't careful you will boil away all the water and ruin your pan. Sound familiar? Well, forget all about the bad old days of steaming food -- Black and Decker's "Flavor Scenter Steamer Deluxe" does it right. They also have a smaller model that sells for ten dollars less than the deluxe model, but I would get the big one because you can do a lot more with it. For example, you can stack the steaming chamber with the asparagus (see above) on top of the shrimp chamber and cook it all at once. There is also a rice bowl that you can put in either chamber. This appliance is so cool that you will probably use it every day. |

The Flavor Scenter Steamer Deluxe is easy to use and easy to clean but the thing that really won me over is the taste of properly steamed food. Thanks to the timer and the water-measuring guides, you can consistently cook things exactly the way you like them. Personally, being a politically incorrect guy, I like my vegetables steamed until they are nice and soft. No problem, I just give them an extra 10 minutes. Unlike other cooking methods, they still come out moist, tender, and full of flavor. If you like em crispy just adjust the timer. Once you find what you like, you'll get exactly what you want every time. Bodybuilders that eat tons of hard-boiled eggs will love this steamer. You can throw up to 12 eggs in at a time, set the timer to thirty minutes and you get perfect hard-boiled eggs. Best of all, steamed eggs are easy to peel. Just crack them and the shells come off in two pieces. Try this just once and you will never boil another egg. According to the manual, you can also steam fish, chicken, and fruit. Steamed chicken takes a little getting used to. I steam boneless, skinless chicken breasts and they taste good and are much juicier than baking, however, they come out looking VERY white. I suppose you could brown them a bit before you steam them. I haven't tried steaming fish or fruit. However, when I warmed up some Tuna Helper, I was pleasantly surprised. You know how it tends to be dry the next day, but if you add too much water to the pan you get cheese SOUP instead of cheese sauce? Well, the steaming process adds just enough moisture that you get cheese sauce every time. This thing is truly idiot-proof. The steamer comes with a rice bowl that is perfect for cooking anything with a sauce. Here is my personal recipe for cheesy rice and vegetables: |
