Fill the steamer with water (up to the "Max" line). Put 3/4 cup of rice, 1.5 cups of water, and some frozen veggies into the rice bowl. Steam it for 30 minutes. Then, put a couple of slices of Velveeta Lite on top of the rice and steam it for another 20 minutes. Since the rice absorbs water, you need to add a bit of water to make a cheese sauce. Fortunately, just enough hot water condenses on the lid of the steamer, so all you have to do is pour this into the rice when it's done cooking. Then, just stir it up and you have perfect cheesy rice and vegetables. If you like crispy vegetables, you would have to adjust the cooking time. I can't help you there -- you couldn't PAY me to eat crunchy vegetables. Well, if youre an eccentric millionaire that would lay out some heavy green to see me make disgusting faces and maybe break a tooth on a tough broccoli stem . . . hmm. OK, I'll entertain all offers. Send me some e-mail. Sometimes, you do have to be careful NOT to add the hot water that condenses on the lid of the steamer to your food. As long as you keep the lid reasonably level while you lift it off, you will not have a problem. However, although this steamer is extremely easy to use, you do have to be careful and remember to use potholders when you remove the lid. That steam gets REALLY hot. It just goes to show that it is not possible to make anything TOTALLY idiot proof. |

After a while, the coating on the heating element started to chip off. This appears to be nothing more than a cosmetic problem -- I have used the steamer for quite some time and this chipping hasn't caused any leaks. Black and Decker calls this the "Flavor Scenter" because you can add herbs and spices to the "center" where the steam rises up through. This gives your food a nice, mild seasoning effect. You can also season your food by using broth or wine instead of water in the steamer. This steamer can do awesome things with rice. However, since this is a double decker steamer, it would be nice if it came with a second rice bowl. It's plenty big for one or two people but if you've got company coming you might want a second rice bowl. I haven't tried it, but you might be able to use a microwave bowl. In my opinion, the Flavor Scenter Steamer Deluxe is an excellent product. Black and Decker has got their er, steam together.
