This chitosan and vitamin C information updates and expands upon the following articles:
Related Price Comparisons: Aug 28, 2004 Update:Although the fast-acting Liposan Ultra is a superior form of a chitosan, I have found that the appetite suppression effect -- regardless of the type of chitosan used -- is most pronounced when it is taken a full hour before the meal. This is very important. Of course, if you lead a busy life, it is not always possible to wait a full hour. In these cases, Liposan Ultra is very convenient because it can be taken right before you eat and it will still block fat, although the appetite suppression is reduced if you do not wait the full hour. A number of people have written to me asking about the "best" dose of chitosan/vitamin C. Of course, that depends on the person and the composition of the meal. However, as a rule of thumb I would look for a dose that really whacks your appetite when taken one hour before the meal. The sweet spot is likely to be around 1 gm of vitamin C with 3 gm of chitosan. Just be sure to keep the ratio right: 0.5/1.5, 1/3, 1.5/4.5, 2/6, etc. Also, be sure to start with a very small dose and work your way up. If you instantly go from a typical low fiber western diet to a super high level of fiber with chitosan supplements, you are likely to get diarrhea and related unpleasantness. On the other hand, if you increase your fiber (chitosan) intake gradually you should experience little or no side-effects. You have probably heard about calcium and weight loss. Well, part of the effect is due to reduced absorption of dietary fat. You can boost the effectiveness of chitosan/vitamin C by taking a calcium supplement right before each meal. Recent research looks like the reduced absorption is the result of the formation of calcium soaps (1). Now here is the cool part: saturated fatty acids are most likely to form calcium soaps. Less saturated fat is definitely a good thing. So currently I'm taking 600mg of calcium carbonate with each dose of chitosan. A couple of cheap Calcium/Magnesium tablets are fine for this purpose, if you can't find a tablet that contains JUST calcium carbonate. Hey, I just thought of something! If you take away the saturated fat, pizza almost qualifies as a ‘health’ food. I always knew pizza was good for you.
