News, Rants & Site InfoNote: Click here to go to the most recent home page update. However, if a search engine brought you to this page, you will most likely find what you are looking for on this page. December 14, 2001: If you have been wondering about green tea and weight loss, I think you will like my new post. It goes beyond the usual news-type coverage and explores the mode of action -- this gives one a deeper understanding of what green tea does (and what it doesn't do), how it works, and how to gain the most benefit from it. As I like to say, real science gets real results! I've redesigned this page but ALL new posts still get listed at the top of the "New Posts" column (temporary) and on the "DrumLib's Posts" page (permanent). Likewise, new links will appear in this column (temporary) and in the "New Links" section (permanent). In addition, I plan to comment on (and post links to, of course) the latest health news and perhaps even an occasional new medical journal article. If I get a lot of mail about something, I will probably do a full post on it. This will allow me to cover a wider variety of health topics and update the site more frequently. Let me know what you think about these ideas and the new home page design. November 7, 2001: The press coverage of the latest ephedra "news" is unbelievably biased. The Ephedra Education Council has written a good response to the FDA ephedra "study." How many times must the FDA data be discredited before they stop pretending that they can use it to perform an accurate risk assessment??? Here is a quote from Arne Astrup, one of the top obesity researchers that was personally involved in a lot of the research on thermogenesis and obesity: "Additional testimony was provided by Arne Astrup, MD/PhD, of Copenhagen, Denmark, whose studies of ephedrine and caffeine found that when the two are combined they are indeed effective as a weight loss product. Dr. Astrup also pointed to an FDA report on the published literature as misrepresenting data in his study on the safety of the two ingredients to instead support FDA's allegations concerning Ephedra. "I think our data and results are mischaracterized and the presentation is flawed and distorted," said Dr. Astrup. "It's giving a very negative picture of the safety profile of the combination of ephedrine/caffeine, which is not supported by our research." Here is a link to the full story. Obesity
