May 2, 2002: A lot of people have written asking about my second megadose chitosan/vitamin C experiment. Well, it's a long time coming, but I think this post is worth the wait. I am happy to report that the combination of Chitosan/Vitamin C + ECA works even better than I expected.

In addition to increasing the dose of chitosan/vitamin C, I adapted the dose to the amount of fat in the meal. It just makes sense to take more chitosan/vitamin C if I'm going pig out on pizza, and less if I'm being good and eating, say, steamed vegetables. However, even if the meal contains very little fat, the chitosan/vitamin C combination will make you feel full longer! The natural eating pattern when megadosing chitosan/vitamin C seems to be two meals a day. This stuff can really whack your appetite!

The results were outrageous! Without dieting (I ate as much as my appetite dictated) I lost about 3 pounds a week for a total of 37 pounds! It really is possible to reproduce the incredible weight loss effect that I read about in medical studies that fed lab rats HUGE doses of chitosan. I am definitely one happy lab rat.

I just obtained a medical article that says some chitosan supplements are extensively ground to reduce the particle size so they can fit more in each capsule. Sounds good, right? Wrong! According to this article, excessive grinding reduces the average polymer molecular weight and the shorter polymer chain lengths are less effective at entrapping chitosan-emulsified fat. Perhaps this explains why a couple of studies found that chitosan failed to increase fecal fat excretion. There may be a VERY significant difference in the effectiveness of different brands of chitosan. I have gotten good results with Natrol Chitosan, but I am investigating all the various manufacturing processes and products. I'll let you know what I find.

dot2sm-purp.gif (915 bytes)Public Citizen wants the FDA to recall Meridia. Prejudiced people feel obesity is not a real disease, so, since we really don't NEED medication, they feel obesity drugs should be held to ridiculously high safety standards. Obesity is killing us in record numbers and they get bent out of shape about minor side effects. Geez! As discussed in Health Canada Bans Thermogenic Supplements, Public Citizen has also been trying to get Big Brother to ban ephedrine-based weight loss supplements. This kind of clueless, misguided activism is a threat to the health of obese people. When it comes time to vote, I hope people remember that all third parties are not created equal -- indeed, the only political party that would not empower prejudice via excessive government is the Libertarian Party.

dot2sm-purp.gif (915 bytes)freebooks4doctors.com has all sorts of medical books online, sorted by specialty. Now here's the cool part: the full text of these books is available online for FREE. And despite the websites name, you don't have to be a doctor to access this amazing collection of medical information. Don't forget to bookmark this one!

dot2sm-purp.gif (915 bytes)FTC Commissioner wants the media to censor supplement ads that make questionable claims. What a joke! About all the mainstream media is good at is churning out inaccurate, ratings-boosting, sensationalized nonsense. Can you imagine them trying to evaluate the scientific merit of health claims??? I think the commissioner missed the cluetrain.smiley.gif (125 bytes)

dot2smTop-purp.gif (924 bytes)The Nando Times has a good article on the ridiculous proposal to tax fatty foods. There is even talk of suing the food industry just like they went after the tobacco industry. Of course, the idea is to make up for the cost imposed on society by socialized medicine obesity-related health problems. But wouldn't it be absurdly unfair to tax the crap out of someone who is losing weight on a low carb diet? And do they actually want to tax healthy fats like olive oil?
