Aug 20, 2002: One of my favorite
obesity scientists has written an editorial on herbal thermogenic supplements in The International Journal Of Obesity And Related Metabolic Disorders.
I think you'll find this interesting reading. Dulloo's editorial explores the discrepancy
between the excellent safety record of ephedrine/caffeine under the Danish system (where
it is a prescription drug called Letigen) and the FDA's anecdotal adverse event reports. I
also include my own analysis and explain how the chain of events suggests that a
phenomenon called the nocebo effect probably plays a large
role in the discrepancy.
There are still
a few things I need to find out before I can publish my next post on chitosan. However,
I've gotten a lot of mail on this so I'll give you a mini update right now. I've been
experimenting with Vanson's fast-dissolving chitosan. You
might want to check out Vanson's
web site -- they have a lot of interesting information. From what I can tell it this
point, it seems to work quite well even when taken right before meals. It is nice not to
have to take it a half hour or so before the meal. Vanson's chitosan tends to be a bit
more expensive than regular slow-dissolving types of chitosan, but I've found a very economical source of this high-quality Vanson
chitosan: VitaminProShop is currently selling 180 capsule bottles (500 mg per cap)
for only $18.99.
At this time, I'm not entirely sure if you need to take vitamin C with Vanson's
fast-dissolving chitosan. This is one of the things that I am looking into. But for the
time being I have been taking 1 gram of vitamin C with every 3 grams of chitosan, as
discussed in my Chitosan Versus Xenical post. I've
been getting good results with this combo, and I really like the convenience of being able
to take it right before meals.
We have a new search engine that rocks! You can always find it in the
"Site Navigation" drop down box.
We would like to
thank everyone who took the time to write and give their best wishes to Selma. She is
doing quite well.
For a limited
time you can read full text articles from the Journal of the American College of Nutrition -- the free trial period
ends in Jan 2003.
