News, Rants & Site InfoDec 10, 2003: Doctors recommending burgers, fries and
beer??? No, I'm not kidding, but there is a
catch. First, here is the exact quote: "eat several plates of toasted
bread, pizza, burgers, fries, beans, mayonnaise, and tea with chocolate
waffles. In order to increase the boy's chance of successful treatment, he
was also prescribed beer." Hey, sign me up Doctor Feelgood. Why would doctors prescribe all that junk food? Well, admittedly, this is a rather extreme example, but it just goes to show that there truly is no single correct way to eat. Anyone who thinks they have THE answer for everyone simply doesn't realize how diverse people are. Think about it. The latest gene mapping data shows that "more than 300 genes, markers, and chromosomal regions have been associated or linked with human obesity phenotypes." And we all get dealt a different genetic hand in the poker game called life. How could one diet possibly be right for EVERYONE?!? So, what's up with the junk food prescription? It's for Ashley Clark, a 14 year old boy with overly large blood vessels, which cause life-threatening low blood pressure and fainting spells several times a day. Doctors gave him drugs to raise his blood pressure, but he also requires a cholesterol-rich diet to maintain his blood pressure. Here is a link to this interesting story. Nov 30, 2003: You've probably seen the headlines about the study that found ephedra to be responsible for 64 percent of all adverse reactions to herbs. Judging from my email, a lot of people have wondered if these numbers are accurate, and what I thought about it. So I wrote a new article, Ephedra Side Effects Compared To Other Herbs, that looks at this study. Good news! Roughly a year ago I wrote about how Selma had a dizzy spell and a subsequent MRI revealed a meningioma (brain tumor). After considerable research, we decided on a noninvasive treatment called fractionated stereotactic radiosurgery. I've already written about this in detail, so I'll just bring everyone up-to-date here. Since her radiosurgery, Selma has had follow-up MRIs about every six months. The first MRI showed no change. She recently got her second MRI and her doctor found that "there appears to be a slight decrease in the size of the tumor. There is no evidence for toxicity or adverse effect in the surrounding normal brain." Needless to say, its party time at DrumLib.com. It is a very good sign that the tumor is already shrinking. Of course, there are no guarantees in life, but going to the medical library and researching your problems can help shift the odds in one's favor.
